about us

We are a dedicated group of young individuals passionate about combating plastic pollution and its detrimental effects on our environment. Our primary initiative involves organizing voluntary coastal cleanups in Thessaloniki, a city known for its rich natural surroundings and its bustling seafront along the Thermaic Gulf. Thessaloniki’s beautiful coastline is a vital part of both the

local ecosystem and the community’s recreational life, attracting tourists and locals alike.

The issue of plastic waste has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to an estimated 25,900 tonnes of additional plastic waste ending up in the oceans. This waste comprises masks, gloves, surgical gowns, visors, antiseptic bottles, and other disposable items. Much of this plastic pollution reaches the seas through major rivers and eventually washes up on beaches, posing severe environmental and health risks.

Our project aims to address this problem by improving our city’s coastal areas, tackling climate change, and promoting environmental stewardship. By organizing coastal cleanups, we aim to send a powerful message about the importance of maintaining a clean environment. Clean coasts are crucial as they are often the first to be impacted by flooding and play a significant role in managing natural disasters.Keeping them clean enhances our city’s resilience to such events.

We envision a society where individuals live in harmony with their natural environment. Our project goals include:

  • Clean beaches are essential for maintaining the natural beauty of our coastlines, ensuring that they remain enjoyable for both locals and tourists.
  • Clean beaches attract more visitors, boosting local tourism and economy. Clear waters also support fishing activities, making it easier for fishermen to earn a living.
  • Removing litter from beaches eliminates hazards such as sharp glass and metal fragments, making these areas safer for everyone.
  • Coastal cleanups provide valuable data on pollution levels and types. By documenting our findings, we can help authorities identify pollution sources and measure the effectiveness of cleanup efforts.
  • Cleanups are an excellent opportunity for community members to meet like-minded individuals who care about environmental protection. These events also connect participants with organizations and resources dedicated to sustainability.
  • Reducing plastic pollution in the oceans helps make seafood safer to consume, as plastic particles in the water can end up in the food chain, posing health risks.
  • Our cleanups encourage proper disposal of waste, highlighting the importance of recycling and composting to reduce landfill impact.

We believe that young people are uniquely positioned to drive change, as we are both heavily impacted by environmental issues and passionate about finding solutions. Our involvement in this project allows us to raise awareness, run educational programs, and promote sustainable practices at local, national, and global levels.
